The capital of Alabama is Montgomery and Birmingham its largest city. It has coastline at the Gulf of Mexico, with the area around Mobile Bay including the famous Gulf Shore resorts providing popular holiday destinations for sun worshippers, as temperatures are guaranteed to average over 90 degrees F during the summer months. Meanwhile the picturesque northern part of the state is characterised by areas of natural beauty with is spectacular mountains, mighty rivers and pine ringed lakes, ranging from the Appalachian mountains in the northeast to "Natural Bridge" rock, the longest natural bridge east of the Rockies, in the west. There are a number of Natural Parks throughout the state, such as Horseshoe Bend National Military Park, Little River Canyon National Preserve, Russell Cave National Monument and Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site.
Geologists may also be interested to visit the 5-mile-wide Wetumpka crater formed by the impact of a meteorite about 80 million years ago situated in Elmore County. The theme of outer space continues at the recently renovated United States Space and Rocket Centre in Huntsville, where it is possible to visit valuable space artifacts such as the authentic Saturn V rocket that put man on the moon in 1969 as well as a Skylab simulator. Other North Alabama landmarks include, in the Decatur area, the Point Mallard Aquatic Centre and the Tuseumbia-Courtland-Decatur Railroad, while in the Florence area you may wish to step into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.
