Alaska Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation
Alaska is the largest state in the United States, as well as being the only non-contiguous state in North America. It is bordered by the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean to the south, the Bering Sea to the west, the Arctic Ocean to the north and Yukon and British Columbia to the east. This state is divided into five distinct regions, each with its own natural wonders and rich history.
The first Europeans to explore Alaska were the Russians, who found that across the Bering Land Bridge was a region populated by Alaska native groups. Alaska's Arctic, in the Far North region of the state, is still home to the Inupiat Eskimos, who traditionally live a subsistence lifestyle and even now pass on their legends and history verbally from generation to generation. You can find out about this vibrant Native culture at the University of Alaska Museum of the North, or at the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center.

If you wish to experience the midnight sun of the summer or the winter's northern lights, with the breathtaking backdrop of the continent's tallest peak, Mount McKinley, you must visit the Interior region, with the Denali National Park. Forests teeming with wildlife and the wide expanses of tundra provide the habitat for the grizzly and the caribou. It was in the 1890s that the gold rushes brought thousands of settlers to these northern regions. Fairbanks was the trade and transportation centre for the prospectors. Here, you can visit an authentic gold dredge, tour a working gold mine and get a taste of pioneer life at Pioneer Park.
Southwest Alaska is mainly coastal, bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea. Get up close to Brown bears ambling along the hills and plains, indulging occasionally in the region's favourite pastime of fishing. Half of all fish caught in western US comes from the Bering Sea, and at Bristol Bay is the world's largest sockeye salmon fishery. This is the place to enjoy real world class sport fishing, or pick up a cruise to Glacier Bay.
The most densely populated region is South Central, offering the advantages of remote wilderness at hand, but with modern communications in place. Prospective anglers may be attracted by rainbow trout and salmon fishing at the Mat-Su Visitors Center. Anchorage is a wonderful gateway to the region's top eco-resorts such as Sadie Cove in Kachemak Bay State Park. From Seward you can explore the Alaskan Fjords in a kayak.
Alaska's Inside Passage, the final region that forms Alaska state, was formed by the erosion of immense glaciers and boasts lush island scenery as well as spectacular fjords. This is the home of the bald eagle, and the habitat for sea lions, porpoises and whales. The coastal mountains are carpeted with forests which are perhaps best viewed from the decks of a cruise boat which will take you to the furthest reaches of the fjords, from Alaska's charming Little Norway, to the Misty Fjords National Monument.
