Arkansas Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation
First explored by the Spanish and eventually purchased from territories belonging to Napolean Bonaparte, the State of Arkansas was admitted to the union in 1836. It played a key role in aiding Texas in its war for independence with Mexico and while not often cited in history, the state was the scene of numerous battles during the American Civil War. Bill Clinton, the 42nd President of the United Sates, was born in Hope, Arkansas.
Arkansas shares a border with six states of the southern region of the US, its eastern border defined by the meandering Mississippi River. Its largest city and capital is Little Rock, situated centrally in between the Ouachiya Mountains in the west and the lowlands of the eastern river plains. These plains are known by the names of their two regions, the Delta and the Grand Prairie, both richly fertile agricultural areas. It is the first US state in which diamonds were found, and at the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Merfreesboro, the only diamond producing site in the world open to the public, you can experience the thrill of searching for real diamonds.
In fact Arkansas is the perfect region to explore the Great American Outdoors. It is packed with 52 state parks, aimed at preserving the history and heritage of the region and providing a diverse range of experiences for a visitor to enjoy, from a stay in a mountain cabin in the bluffs of Arkansas's highest peaks in the Ozark and Ouachita Mounains to the tranquility of camping by the shores of its lakes and rivers.
The caves and crevices of Lee Creek Valley, the lush beauty of the Crawley's Ridge Forest, and the rapids of the Cossatot Falls provide plenty of exhilarating challenges for those looking for horseback riding, caving and river running or kayaking experiences. Or take a break from all the excitement and visit some of the fascinating historic sites in Arkansas. Seven of the state parks deal with important battle sites of the Civil War. The Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park hosts Arkansas's largest battle reenactment, providing a dramatic view of a major Civil War battle just as Union and Confederate troops saw back in 1862.In Newport, Washington and the Red River Campaign sites, you can experienceat first hand pioneer reenactments, and step back in time by discovering perfectly preserved historical villages, museums and paddleboats. With few exceptions, all Native American tribes subjected to Indian removal came, by land or water, through Arkansas during their journey westward. At several state parks you can walk a segment of the actual route and gain a true perspective on what happened. At Village Creek, a section of the route has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, being named as the most dramatic remaining section of the Indian trail.
Throughout Arkansas there is a wealth of opportunity to observe wildlife, especially birdlife. Lake Chicot is a haven for bird-watchers, able to spot egrets, herons, eagles, ibis and the endangered wood stork. Others may be on the look-out for the alligator, mink, deer and armadillo.
