Nearly half of Colorado state is actually flat, despite its popular image as the land of the Rocky Mountains. It does, however, have more than 500 mountain peaks that exceed 4,000m in height, of which Mount Elbert in Lake County is the highest. The state is divided from north to south by the Interstate highway 25, which passes from Fort Collins in the north to Trinidad in the south, via the capital city, Denver, and Colorado Springs. To the west are the Rocky Mountains, and the eastern portion of the state consists of a sparsely settled area known as theColorado Eastern Plains. Much of this land is used for dryland farming or ranching. Colorado is one of only 4 states in the US to share a common border, Four Corners, along with Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. At this intersection, it is possible to stand in four states at once.
Colorado is a superb location to spend a winter holiday. Its numerous winter sports destinations include Roaring Fork valley, where you can learn to ski with certified ski instructors, or alternatively enjoy a trip through the winter wonderland on a dog sled. There are a number of Mountain Resorts which have ice-skating and snow-boarding facilities in the winter, and in the summer are ideal for camping, hiking, fishing and picnicking. If hunting is your preferred sport, remember that the bugle of a bull elk can be heard through many of Colorado's forested areas, pronghorn run nimbly through open prairie and once you have secured a hunting licence, these trophy-worthy animals can be tracked and bagged. Throughout the Rockies, Wildlife Managed Properties where both hunting and fishing can be enjoyed abound, such as Watson Lake, Manhattan Creek and Tarryall Reservoir.
If you are a golfer, improve your handicap here, since apparently, due to Colorado's high altitude, drives fly further down the fairway. While the altitude may help with the long ball, it's still up to you to finesse the putt at any of the professionally designed courses at Aspen, Cobble Creek, Copper Mountain and Green Valley Ranch, to name but a few.
Early industry in Colorado was based on the extraction and processing of minerals and agricultural products. In the second half of the 20th century, the high tech, scientific and service sector have expanded greatly. Denver is an important financial center as well as having a vibrant cultural scene. The Denver Art Museum, or DAM, with its amazing new wing designed by the world-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind, is a must see. Have a night out at the Denver Performing Arts Complex, or at Red Rocks, 15 miles west of Denver, where you will discover an incredible geologically-formed open-air amphitheatre that is unique, consisting of two 300 foot monoliths which form the venue, and provide the backdrop for the Visitor Centre with its interpretive exhibits and restaurant.
Nearby Colorado Springs was already an established posh resort in the 1800s, and now has become a popular destination for those wishing to benefit from a relaxing stay in the countless resorts attached to natural hot springs, such as the Springs Resort and Dunton Hot Springs, which is restored ghost town, and where you can recline by an open fire in an exquisitely furnished log cabin having enjoyed the therapeutic mineral pools and full spa treatment. There are many attractions in and around Colorado Springs which showcase the Colorado or Pike's Peak Gold Rush which was the boom in gold prospecting in the area around 1859, and one of the greatest in US hstory.
