Connecticut Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation
One of the oldest states in the US, settled first by the Dutch and English in the 1630s, Connecticut is also known as the 'Constitution State'. Thanks to its long coastline on the Long Island Sound, it has a strong maritime tradition. Despite its size, it does have regional variations in its landscape and culture from the wealthy estates of Fairfield County's 'Gold Coast' (Connecticut has the highest per capita income of the US), to the rolling mountains and horse-farms of Litchfield Hills in northwestern Connecticut.
Visitors from all over the world come here to surround themselves with the beauty of the American Fall, viewing the spectacular colours of the foliage from horseback, bicycle, or simply during a gentle stroll through the villages, hills and valleys. Many towns centre around a small park, or 'green', such as Litchfield Green, Simsbury Green and New Milford Green. Near the green may stand a pretty white church, a town meeting hall, a tavern and several colonial houses.
Forests, rivers, lakes, waterfalls and a sandy shore add to the state's beauty. There are a number of state parks which will guide you on your nature trail, such as Sleeping Giant, Macedonia Brook and Talcott Mountain state parks. These form the backdrop for a number of specially organised walking weekends in October. Castle View Balloons in Cheshire will even take you up in a hot-air balloon for a sunrise flight to get a bird's eye view of the leaves, and you can stay in some of the state's coziest inns.
From photography and sculpture to paintings and pottery, autumn arts festivals abound throughout Connecticut. At the Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven you can join a class or day-long workshop in a diverse range of arts and crafts. Roseland Cottage in Woodstock features the work of local artists during its annual festival. If you are travelling with kids, they would love to join in the fun at other local events, such as the Chrysanthemum Festival in Bristol, the Annual Durham Fair or the Chowderfest at Mystic Seaport. Taste the delicious chowder, seafood specialities and seasonal desserts, washed down with warm apple cider.
The harvest season brings a bounty of pumpkins, corn, apples and several other crops to Connecticut. At the same time, visitors can learn about the state's agricultural past at the Mashantucket Museum and Research Center or the Connecticut Antique Machinery Association Museum in Kent. Home to more than 30 haunted sites, Connecticut's history is rich with seances, curses and mysterious deaths. Visit the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center, The Benton Homestead Museum or the Lighthouse Inn and see if you come out believing in ghosts!
