Delaware Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation
Situated on the Atlantic Coast, in the Mid-Atlantic region of the US, Delaware prides itself on being America's 'First State', commemorating the fact that in 1787 it was the first of the thirteen original states to ratify the US Constitution. Delaware is only 96 miles long, ranging from 9 to 35 miles across, making it America's second-smallest state (after Rhode Island). It sits on a level plain; the highest elevation, located at Ebright Azimuth, does not rise even 450 feet above sea level. The northern part is full of rollng hills. South of Newark and Wilmington, the state follows the Atlantic Coast Plain with flat, sandy and, in some places, swampy ground.
Wilmington, in the north, has a number of interesting sights for visitors. Listed on the National Register for Historic Places, the Wilmington and Western Railroad takes you through the scenic Red Clay Valley. At the nearby Greenbank Mill you can experience Delaware in the Early Republic. Step into the 300-year-old past and witness history as it comes alive with the 18 foot water wheel and hands-on activities on this gristmill, textile mill and farm site. A few miles away at Goodstay Gardens, you will discover a Tudor-style garden, with boxwood lined 'rooms', gravel paths, a woodland garden and a magnolia allee. Nearby, another garden, this time formal French in style, surrounds the Nemours Mansion with its splendid Louis XVI style architecture. You can visit the 102 rooms furnished with fine antiques, rare rugs, tapestries and outstanding works of art. The home of collector and horticulturalist Henry Francis de Pont (1880-1969), Winterthur, is one of the greatest surviving country estates of its kind, typically American, in the nation.
In coastal Lewes, thanks to the Lewes Historical Society, you can visit 12 beautifully restored historic properties in one of America's most historic towns, with its fascinating story of maritime adventure, architectural elegance and 375 years of colonial charm. Here, Cape Henlopen's beaches attract thousands of summer visitors who enjoy swimming and sunbathing.
The capital city of Delaware is Dover. The recently refurbished Dover Opera House, built in 1904 but now re-opened as the Schwartz Center for the Arts, is situated in Dover. The Delaware Public Archives is one of the finest historical research facilities in the US, featuring interactive exhibits that make local history easy and fun to learn for kids.
