Guests at Discovery Cove in Orlando can swim with bottlenose dolphins, feed tropical birds, mingle with stingrays and snorkel with tropical fish.
Less hospitable waters are to be found in the mangrove swamps of the Everglades. With the scent of musty cypress and with alligators slinking from the banks, paddle through the seamless waters among the 10,000 islands on a guided tour exploring the Marco Island area of the Paradise Coast. A watersports junkie’s jackpot, Martin County revolves around the city of Stuart on Florida’s east coast, roughly equidistant from Miami and Orlando. Charter a fishing boat or a deep seas fishing yacht for an angling adventure.
Florida is the top US destination for families. As if it were not enough to find that the Walt Disney World Resort is located here, in Orlando, there are numerous other mega-resorts which specialise in providing amenities, attractions and entertainment that are designed to satisfy every child’s appetite for fun. While Mom goes to the spa for an algae wrap at The Breakers, Palm Beach, Pop can head for the Coconut Crew children’s camp with the kids to play croquet and then on a beach scavenger’s hunt. Youngsters also love to visit the Cocoa Beach area, known as the ‘Space Coast’ because of its ties to the Kennedy Space Center. You can have lunch with an astronaut, watch your child get suited up, experience g-force and embark on a (simulated) Mars rover mission. Families can follow in the footsteps of hero astronauts along the Indian River, and board a weightless flight with zero-g at Cape Canaveral.
A railroad into the old Indian trading post started Miami down its path as Florida´s most dynamic city and a few works of modern engineering made Miami Beach a sudden hotspot of the 1920s. With a colourful arts scene, world-class shopping, more watersports and a load of family attractions, Miami makes one of the nations most well-rounded destinations.
