Kentucky Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation
From about 1650 until the arrival of the first white settlers, Shawkee tribes from the north of the Ohio River and the Cherokee and Chickasaw tribes from south of the Cumberland River battled for dominance over the ‘Great Meadow’ that would later develop into Kentucky. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Kentucky was torn apart by divided loyalties. Its strategic potential was recognised by both sides in the war, and several bloody engagements took place between the Unionists headed by Lincoln and the Confederates headed by Jefferson Davis. Ironically, both men were born in Kentucky, in log cabins, within one year and 100 miles of each other. During World War II, Kentucky began to shift from an agricultural to an industrial economy, with tourism meanwhile developing strongly and aided by an impressive state park network and new state highways. Recently, promoting native local produce harvested from its fertile soil has made Kentucky, like many other US states, a centre for agritourism. There are a number of orchards and ‘U-Pick’ businesses throughout the thousands of acres of land such as Pleasant Hill in Harrodsburg, where visitors can taste vegetables grown with heirloom seeds like those planted by the original Shakers of the village, or Chaney’s Dairy Barn near Bowling Green, where you can sample fine home-made ice-cream, take a tour of the farm, or put together your own personal gift basket laden with delicious Kentucky products. There are more tours and tastings around Kentucky’s dozen or so wineries- Kentucky was actually the site of America’s first ever commercial vineyard.
But what wine is to the Napa Valley, bourbon is to Central Kentucky. On the state’s Bourbon Trail, 95 % of the world’s bourbon supply is produced. Tour the distilleries to sample the flavoursome subtleties of the different varieties from Jim Beam to Buffalo Trace. Still on the subject of the palate, and not quite as famous as Kentucky Fried Chicken, you must try other Kentucky favourite dishes: Benedictine and burgoo. Around Derby time, you would spread Benedictine, made with cucumber and cream cheese, on bread. Burgoo is a rich meaty stew, cooked long and slow with vegetables and potatoes. Southern cooking is best enjoyed at one of Kentucky’s historic inns: Boone Tavern in Berea, Beaumont Inn in Harrodsburg, or the Old Stone Inn in Simpsonsville, for example.
Kentucky has a huge variety of entertainments to offer the visitor. Amusement parks, speedway race-tracks, theatres and wonderful shopping opportunities. The perfect souvenir of your trip could be a finely-crafted piece of Shaker furniture, Louisville Stoneware pottery, or a blanket from Churchill weavers.
Finally, if you are searching for an excursion that is a bit out of the ordinary, why not let horses be your means of transportation on some of the wooded trails of Kentucky’s state parks, or embark on a river cruise by houseboat equipped with all mod cons. Kentucky’s diverse landscapes, numerous waterways and variety of wildlife make for an unbelievable getaway that no outdoor enthusiast can resist. Most refreshing is to find that a large part of Kentucky is still in its natural state.
