Louisiana Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation

The state of Louisiana can be divided into two distinct geographical zones: the prairie and woodlands of the north and northwest, which are the hilly uplands, and the alluvial coastal regions, where the Mississippi River finally flows into the Gulf of Mexico. Louisiana’s history and economy has been greatly influenced by its strategic location at the mouth of the Mississippi, which for centuries was a vital trade shipping route. Now, the Port of South Louisiana, situated between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, is the largest volume shipping port in the Western hemisphere, and the largest bulk cargo port in the world.

Louisiana is divided into sixty-four parishes rather than counties, and five regions. Here, you can find an incredibly diverse mix of cultures and races, with colonial French, Spanish and German influences. Especially notable among its residents are the Creoles and Cajuns. The area stretching across the Gulf of Mexico and up into South Central Louisiana is known as Cajun Country. Centuries ago, French Canadians populated the area and developed the beguiling culture that will entrance today’s visitor. Discover crawfish etouffeé and dance to zydeco music. There are 2 fascinating living history museums in Lafayette: the Acadian Village and the Mississippi Mud Museum. You may be interested to take a swamp tour in the mystical Atchafalaya Basin where among the wonderful sights are the blue herons, snowy egrets and moss-laden cypress trees. All along the Cajun coast, from Morgan City to Cocodrie, you can embark on wildlife adventures, dip into the warm Gulf waters, and feel the draw of a deep sea fishing excursion. Call in on Chretian Point Plantation, where a pirate was shot by the mistress of the house on the staircase later made famous as that replicated for Tara, in Gone With the Wind.

In the southeast corner of Louisiana lies the Greater New Orleans region and the city of New Orleans. This inspiring city, famous for music, food and architecture, is well worth a stay. With its hundred-year-old mansions along St Charles Avenue, and the colourful Creole cottages of Vieux Carre, visitors can get up close to the city’s French and Spanish roots. In the galleries of the Warehouse District and the eclectic shops on Magazine Street, you will discover the city’s thriving arts community. A typical meal in New Orleans might be pecan-encrusted trout with bourbon-soaked bread pudding for dessert of a delicious Cajun-inspired spicy soup or stew.

Meanwhile, dotted with palatial antebellum estates that define this charming section of the state, Plantation Country is the perfect destination for anyone interested in witnessing what life was like when cotton was king. Each home gives you an intimate glimpse into the daily lives of the people of this fascinating period in history. Visit the Houmas House Plantation in Darrow or the homes of the Donaldsonville area. Wind your way across the Atchafalaya Basin, through the rolling hills of St. Francisville and along the Great River Road as you travel back to the 1800s.

Crossroads aptly gets its name fron the crossing of the El Camino Real and Natchez Trails. Encounter bears, possums and deer in the 800,000 acre Kisatchie National Forest or visit Alexandria´s oldest structure, Kent Plantation House. Do not miss the famous Natchitoches Meat Pie after a day in the great outdoors at the Toledo Bend Reservoir.

Northern Louisiana, as well as being the ‘Sportsman’s Paradise’, is famous as the place, near Acadia, where in 1933 the notorious Bonnie and Clyde took their last ride. In Shreveport, you can sample the excitement of casino gaming, dazzling restaurants, during a stay at a luxury hotel. AT the American Rose Center, winding paths, babbling brooks and fragrant scents guide you through beds of some of the grandest and rarest of roses. Travel east to Monroe, and treat yourself to a riverboat ride on the scenic Oachita River.
Then, you will have begun to see Louisiana.
