Maine Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation
The northernmost portion of New England, and bordering Canada, the state is known for its rugged, rocky coastline, the beautiful rolling scenery of the low mountains of its interior and its stunning seafood cuisine, especially lobsters and clams. Ninety per cent of its land is forested, and much is uninhabited. Millions of visitors enjoy the rugged rocks, cliffs, bays and inlets as well as beaches, lighthouses, fishing villages and thousands of offshore islands which characterise the scenery of Acadia National Park. You can explore here FDR’s summer house on Campobello Island, experience whale-watching, puffin-watching and seakayaking, and dine exquisitely at Bar Harbour. This resort is where some of America´s most powerful families (Rockefeller, Ford, Carnegie) built their spectacular summer residences, on Millionaires Row. The Abbe Museum showcases the Wabenaki Indians, some of Maine´s earliest residents.
Further south down the coast, the picturesque town of Camden offers the best of both worlds. Look to the east and you can see the blue waters of Penobscot Bay. To the west, the peaks of the Camden Hills reach up to the sky. An easy hike up Mt Battie offers incredible views of the bay and mountains as well as the town of Camden below. At nearby Rockport, you will find the Center for Maine Contemporary Art. Portland, too, offers a wealth of historic and cultural attractions. Maine’s metropolitan area sits directly on the lovely Casco Bay, a gateway to historic forts and lighthouses. A four-season recreational wonderland, Portland is surrounded by classic New England villages and wide sandy beaches. Here, and at resorts such as Kittery and Old Orchard, feast on lobster, sail into secluded harbours, or shop at the quaint local boutiques. There are many seasonal festivals, cultural events and historical museums to entertain the whole family.
Inland, Maine’s Western Lakes and Mountains form the perfect backdrop for the brilliant palette of the American ‘fall’, are home to some great winter ski resorts, unfold with a brilliant blaze of colour with spring flowers and become even more vibrant when the summer sun illuminates the hills in emerald green. Visit Sunday River, the historic town of Fryeburg and the lakeside town of Naples.
Further north, the Upper Kennebec and Moose River Valleys offer incomparable opportunities for hiking, fishing, hunting and skiing. Learn about local history at Augusta´s Maine State Museum or visit its Fort Western, the oldest surviving wooden fort in New England. The Maine Highlands is a region of superlatives. Here you will find the most plentiful moose and deer in the state, more parkland than anywhere else, Moosehead Lake, as well as mile-high Mt Katahdin, the tallest peak in Maine. Outstanding whitewater rafting on Penobscot and Kennebec Rivers is offered. Enjoy all types of outdoor recreation, and some of the best hunting and fishing in the east. Before heading here, sample the culture, restaurants and accommodation in the gateway community of Bangor. And in ‘The County’, Aroostook, that is, find wonderful local attractions including the Houlton Market Square District, with an impressive collection of buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visit the world’s largest scale model of the solar system, which begins in Presque Isle and ends 40 miles away at the Houlton Visitor Information Center.
