Maryland Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation
The majority of Maryland’s population is concentrated in the cities and outlying suburbs of Washington, DC and Maryland’s largest city, Baltimore. Maryland possesses a wide variety of landscapes, and is sometimes called ‘America in Minature’. You will find sandy bays in the Atlantic East, with seagrass covered dunes, low marshlands teeming with wildlife, gently undulating countryside with oak forests and, in the west, mountain pine groves. The Chesapeake Bay is key to Maryland’s geography and economy, and almost bisects the state. Maryland has recently been declared the wealthiest state of the US, with the life sciences forming an important aspect of the service sector and along with transportation and government, forming a cornerstone of its economic activity.
Maryland’s Eastern Shore region is mainly flat farmland. It is an area suited to exploration by bicycle or by boat. At the Kent County Rock Hall Museum you will find Native American artefacts and nautical relics. Near Chestertown, visit the 3000-acre Remington Farms wildlife refuge or hop on a boat and explore the 31 marinas in the area. The Blackwater Wildlife Refuge is to be found in Dorchester County, with an incredible collection of birdlife to be discovered. South of this area, you will find a landscape of quaint watermen’s villages and ferry bridges. In Salisbury, take a walk in the park along the Wicomico River or cruise aboard the Maryland Lady and imagine yourselfback in the days of the steamboats. Crisfield is known as the ‘Crab Capital of the World’ because so many of its residents’ lives are centred around these tasty crustaceans. Ocean City is a traditional family coastal resort, complete with 10 miles of white sandy beaches, a famous boardwalk and a fishing pier with a huge Ferris wheel, making it a fabulous destination for either families or sports fishermen: Ocean City is the home to the largest white marlin tournament in the country.
In the Central Region, the attractions range from the state’s historic capital, Annapolis, where you will find a plaque at City Dock commemorating the arrival of Kunta Kinte, the ancestor of Alex Haley, author of Roots, to Baltimore, its largest city, steeped in history and home to a wonderful array of museums and galleries. Beyond these cities, are to be found waterfront villages and mill towns, and the gently rolling hills of horse country and the waters of Chesapeake Bay. This area is part of two geographical regions, the Atlantic Coastal Plain and the Piedmont Plateau, and the local industries range from quarrying marble, granite and other stones to harvesting fish and seafood. Howard County is a railway enthusiast’s heaven. The history of the railroad can be found at the B&O Railroad Station Museum, once the terminus of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. This station became famous when in 1830, the famous ‘Tom Thumb’ locomotive raced a horse-drawn carriage from Ellicott City to Baltimore. The horse won on that occasion, but clearly the railroad was here to stay.
The Capital Region’s history spans three centuries of Maryland and American life, from the earliest colonists to the pioneers in space flight. Here you will find peaceful farmland as well as bustling cities and suburbs. In 1791, Maryland donated land from Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties to be used for the nation’s new capital city, Washington, DC. Once an important farming area, the Capital Region is known today for its many high-tech industries and research centres in the fields of telecommunications, electronics, computers, health and medicine.
