Massachusetts Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation
Massachusetts is situated in the New England region of the northeastern United States. Its western half is primarily rural, while the city of Boston is at the centre of the densely populated eastern half. Some of the towns and villages near Boston were founded as far back as 1620-1630, when English colonists first came to the continent and formed early settlements such as that in Plymouth, known as ‘America’s Hometown’. The Pilgrim way of life can be glimpsed at Plimoth Plantation, and at the Pilgrim Memorial state park, you can see the simple glacial erratic boulder on the shore of Plymouth Harbour known as Plymouth Rock, which has become known as the symbol of the courage and faith of the men and women who first landed ashore in the Mayflower. A replica of this famous vessel is anchored nearby.
For a more contemporary experience, you should visit the New Bedford Whaling Museum, which is the largest museum devoted to the story of whaling worldwide. Through incredible exhibits, the museum vividly brings to life the whaling era and the history of the local area, focusing in particular on the sailing ship era from the end of the 18th century. Nearby Duxbury is home to fabulous beaches, and to the Arts Complex Museum, where you can discover an eclectic mix of Asian and American art, Shaker furniture and a Japanese tea garden.
The southern tip of the state is a large, sandy, arm-shaped peninsula called Cape Cod, with the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket to the south. Famous for its rolling dunes and gable-roofed, grey-shingled houses, Cape Cod is the place to head for outdoor activities and countless family attractions. On Martha’s Vineyard, a 45-minute ferry ride from the mainland, you will come across quaint shops, natural sites, fine dining and lively nightlife throughout six picturesque towns. Nantucket is characterized by cobblestone streets, antique shops, lighthouses and acres of conservation areas.
Boston is a big city, but with a compact centre which can be covered on foot in a couple of hours. Discover here the history of the Freedom Trail and the modern attractions of the Institute of Contemporary Art and the New England Aquarium. Take the kids to the Children’s Museum, or to the Cambridge Museum of Science across the Charles River. The area around Harvard Square features ethnic cuisine, wonderful bookstores and the fascinating MIT Museum. Greater Boston is a cultural feast, with fantastic transportation networks enabling you to cover many miles of museums and sites in good time.
North of Boston is a haven for beach lovers and seafaring types. You can be haunted by the sites of the Salem Witch Trial at Lowell, and be captivated by the thrilling history of the birthplace of the American Revolution. The Nashoba Valley Winery is an international award-winning winery located in the heart of apple country. Set on 52 rolling acres, the winery offers a brewery and gourmet restaurant. In the heart of Massachusetts, take a glimpse back in time at Old Sturbridge Village, a recreation of an 1830s rural New England settlement. Visit the Fruitlands Museum and enjoy a tour along with views of Mt Wachusett and Mt Monadnock. Stop at Wachusett Mountain if the season is right, since it is one of southern New England’s most popular ski areas. And be sure to go to the Worcester Art Museum, one of the leading small art museums in America.
Western Massachusetts has a broad range of attractions, from the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, and Six Flags New England, the largest regional amusement and water theme park, to the rural charms of Franklin County. The Great Falls Discovery Center in Turner Falls has exhibits showcasing the Connecticut River Watershed’s rich natural, cultural and industrial history. The Berkshires is an area which combines beautiful mountain landscapes with cutting edge contemporary art galleries and performing arts venues including Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
