Minnesota Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation
Located in the Midwestern region of the US and bordering with Canada to the north, Minnesota is known as the 'Land of 10,000 Lakes', which form the focal point for many of its outdoor recreational activities. Its landscapes range from southwestern prairie grassland, to the Big Woods deciduous forest of the southeast, and northwards to the coniferous boreal forest- a wilderness of pine and spruce trees sparsely populated by man, but with healthy populations of black bear and moose, bison and wolf.
Today, Minnesota has 72 state parks and recreation areas, 58 state forests and numerous wildlife preserves. In the southern region, the Mississippi River and many small, quiet streams wind their way through lovely valleys nestled among wooded bluffs. The Minnesota Heartland Preserve in Granite Falls offers opportunities for hunting and fishing all year round. If you fancy hiking, biking or cross-country skiing through historic countryside, follow the scenic Root River State Trail. In this region, the Minnesota River flows gently between ribbons of oak, elm, maple and cottonwood trees. It wanders past rich farmland and through towns such as New Ulm and Sleepy Eye, steeped in local history. Several sites tell of the Dakota Indians who lived here, the pioneers who then settled, and the tragic conflict between the two communities.
Heading north you will arrive at the Twin Cities area, the metropolitan area of vibrant Minneapolis-St. Paul, which is the entertainment and cultural centre of the upper Midwest. The scenery of this attractive metropolis includes contemporary skylines, historic architecture and open areas with parks, lakes and an impressive Mississippi riverfront featuring, in Minneapolis, historic mills, the 1883 Stone Arch Bridge, and scenic walkways. Downtown St. Paul is home to a creative children's museum, superb science museum and landmark history centre. On the eastern edge of the region, the ST. Croix Valley is simply too pretty to be called metropolitan, even though you can be there in half an hour from downtown St. Paul. Take a river tour, and admire the stunning scenery and charming river towns of Stillwater and Hastings.
The Northwest region is where the prairie meets the North Woods, the land of the legendary lumberjack Paul Bunyan. This is where the Mississippi begins. It is a place of uncompromising beauty, etched with dense forests and sky-tinted lakes. Here, at the Itasca state park, you have the chance to ander beneath majestic pine trees and walk across the Mississippi at its source. On the eastern edge of the Great Plains, the Red River Valley was once swathed in tall prairie grass as far as the eye can see, and traversed by great herds of buffalo. Today, this rich agricultural region boasts a range of outdoor recreation plus two lively cities on the plains: Moorhead and Fargo.
The 'Arrowhead' of the Northeastern region borders on the magnificent Lake Superior, and within a scattering of smaller towns, offers several interesting finds to the visitor. Voyageur country is home to Minnesota's only national park, named in honour of the French-Canadian canoemen who paddled Minnesota's northern waterway carrying loads of beaver and other fur pelts. The park is a motorboat paradise, and in fact the whole region has over 1,600 lakes. WHen the waters freeze and snow carpets these north woods, it is time for ice fishing and snowmobiling along well-maintained trails which criss-cross the area. This is a fantastic location for experiencing the thrills of all forms of outdoor recreation by day, and by night, staying up with the kids to indulge in some indoor wolf-watching, with plenty of hot cocoa to keep everyone warm.
