Mississippi Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation
Most of Mississippi is part of the East Gulf Coastal Plain, generally consisting of low hills, and with large bays at Bay Saint Louis, Biloxi and Pascagoula along the Gulf coastline. The northeast is a region of fertile black earth that extends into the Black Belt, while the northwest is made up of a section of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain, also known as the Mississippi Delta. Early planters used slaves to build levees along the river to divert flooding. They built on top of the natural levees that formed from dirt pushed up in flooding. As cultivation of cotton increased in the Delta, slaves were considered too valuable to hire out for such dangerous work, and it was undertaken by gangs of Irish immigrant labourers. At the same time, Mississippi is heavily forested, with over half of the state's area covered by trees, and lumber is a prevalent industry.
Mississippi's culture and heriitage is richer than the soil of the Mississippi Delta. You can see it in the state's museums, historical homes, Civil War sites and landmarks. You can also see it reflected in the impact of the Mississippi River, in the unfolding of the Civil Rights Movement and in Mississippi's contribution to literature, to fine arts and crafts. Mississippi generated rich, quintissentially American music traditions: gospel music, country music, jazz, blues, and rock 'n' roll all were invented, or heavily developed by Mississippi musicians, most of them from the Delta. As well as in the lyrics of the songs, the state's complex history has been chronicled by great storytellers such as the Nobel Prize-winner William Faulkner, playwright Tennessee Williams, and authors such as Alice Walker.
Mississippi displays, within a large number of historic sites, the tremendous legacy of its African-American inhabitants. You can visit historic churches, mseums, universities, homes and cemetaries, where you can examine and explore the accomplishments of those who, despite oppressive times, prevailed and prospered. In Oxford, tour the Center for the Study of Southern Culture, a research facility focusing on Southern music, literature and folk life. Drive through the picturesque campus of the university of Mississippi, from which James Meredith, the first African-American to attend, graduated in 1963. At the capital city of Jackson, you can get an overview of the Civil Rights Movement's history at the Old Capitol Historic Museum.
There are many sites dedicated to the history of the Native Americans of the region. The Spanish explorers of the 16th century found a land densely populated with Indians, and suffered a serious attack from at least of Mississippi tribe, the Chickasaws. The rich food resources and favourable climate of the area attracted migration from the north - it is now believed that the first people whose descendants came to be known as 'Indians' actually crossed from Siberia to Alaska thousands of years ago- who slowly developed from being non-sedentary hunters and gatherers to farming people with more organised societies. The history of many of the Mississippi tribes can be discovered at Natchez, Tupelo and the Winterville Mounds, among many other interesting sites.
Mississippi was the site of many of the fiercest battles of the Civil War in history. Nearly 150 years later, you can still visit a number of impressive war hstory sites such as Vicksburg National Military Park and Shiloh Military Park.
