Missouri Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation
Missouri reflects the demographic, economic and political makeup of the nation, with its mix of urban and rural culture. Its condition as a border state is borne out by the cultural influences of the Midwest as well as the South, and eastern as well as the western US. Its geography is also highly varied, for the northern part is largely flat, while in the south are located the Ozark Mountains, with the Missouri River dividing the two. Missouri's capital is Jefferson City, while its largest city is Kansas City. The confluence of the mighty Mississippi and Missouri rivers is located near St. Louis.
The Northeast region offers much to explore: charming riverside communities, endless activities in the state's largest metropolitan area; outdoor adventures, and 22 of Missouri's wineries. St. Louis, the gateway to the west, is home to the 630-foot tall Gateway Arch. Visit the Museum of Westward Expansion beneath the monument and travel to the top for a not-to-be-missed view. Other highlights include the Forest Park with the famous St. Louis Zoo, The Hill, with its array of old world Italian restaurants, and the equally enticing shops and restaurants of St. Charles. There is a National Scenic Byway which takes you from St. Louis north along the Mississippi, where Hannibal is the boyhood home of Mark Twain, and visitors can recreate the famous stories of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.
In Northwest Missouri visit Kansas City, the European-influenced city of fountains, with its colourful City Market, the Country Club Plaza and the historic Westport district. Travel also to historic Liberty to see the Jesse James Bank Museum, where Jesse carried out the nation's first daylight robbery; and visit the site of a major Civil War battle. A drive east brings you to Jamesport, Missouri's largest Amish settlement. Amish foods, crafts and antiques tempt today's travellers, while tours allow a glimpse into the Amish lifestyle.
Further south, Missouri's Central region boasts premier lake and resort destinations, fantastic scenery and outdoor fun. The 265-mile long Katy Trail state park, America's longest rails-to-trails conversion, traverses the region, meandering along the Missouri River. In Jefferson City, tour th ecapital and the Missouri State Museum. Another area to discover is Sedania, where Scott Joplin composed some of his most famous ragtime tunes. Or stop off in Blackwater and browse in its antique stores and even stay a night in the Iron Horse Hotel, an inn occupying a restored 1890 railway hotel.
The live-entertainment capital of the US is located in Branson, in the Southwest region. Here you can find every kind of musical show, the Silver Dollar Theme Park, a six-storey IMAX theatre, cruises on the showboat Branson Belle and the world's largest museum dedicated to the Titanic. Just outside Springfield, relive Civil War history at Wilson's Creek Battlefield National Park. Escape from all this to the town of Mansfield and tour the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum and Home, where the Little House books were written.
The southeastern region is a delight to those who love exploring, trekking, climbing and paddling in the great outdoors. The Ozark National Scenic Riverways, radiating from Eminence, offer outstanding outdoor activities amongst the pristine, spring-fed streams. At Bonne Terre, near Fredericktown, you will discover the world's largest man-made caverns within the amazing lead-mining district. The most intrepid will enjoy scuba-diving its five flooded levels, while those less inclined to adventure will prefer a stroll above ground around some of the picturesque river towns of the Mississippi like Ste. Genevieve and Cape Girardeau.
