Montana state lures millions of visitors every year to visit its three main attractions: the Glacier National Park, the Battle of the Little Bighorn site, and the Yellowstone National Park. The state borders on Canada, and has a diverse topography, ranging from its famous mountainous region in the west, forming a part of America's Rockies, to the northern Great Plains, which form the eastern region of the state. The list of maountain ranges to be found here is endless, but between these mountains are many scenic valleys, rich in agricultural resources and rivers, and providing countless opportunities for tourism and recreation. Montana has eight National forests and over 20 National Wildlife Refuges.
The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument is located in Southeastern Montana, and commemorates the last battle of General custer which took place in 1876, when he and his US Cavalrymen were wiped out by Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors. The museum features exhibitsof the history of the battle, Custer himself, weapons, archaeology, Plains Indian life, all with an interpretive walking tour. The area around the site is the home of two Indian Nations: the Crow and the Cheyenne. Meanwhile, the way of life and history of the cowboy lives strong, although the serious rancher has replaced the colourful gambler and gunslinger. This area plays host to many rodeos, where you can experience the action, colour, shooting and the best riding you have ever seen. You can also link up with the 15 facilities in central and eastern Montana that make up The Dinosaur Trail. Follow it and see not only the wide variety of fossils and skeletons of these creatures, but the rugged landscape their remains are found in today. At times, it is even possible to participate in an archaeological dig, under the guidance of experts.
Further north, Missouri River Country is an unspoiled land offering amazing hunting and fishing, as well as the historic trails of Lewis and Clark as they explored their way across the continent, and further fossil finds on the trail of the dinosaurs. The Sioux and Assimiboine peoples were the first residents here, whose rich history is preserved and celebrated with pow wows and other events. Visit the Valley County Pioneer Museum in Glasgow which exhibits a chronological history of the region from the age of the dinosaur to the present day.
Three entrances to the Yellowstone National Park are located in the south of the state, and are a gateway to a region of spectacular natural beauty, offering a wealth of leisure activities from trekking and canoeing to fishing and picnicking. There is a year-round programme of events to make your stay even more memorable.
The western regions of the state are the most mountainous, and are a true sportsman's paradise. Apart from the majestic mountain scenery, there are excellent facilities on offer at numerous resorts throughout the valleys of the region, welcoming visitors during all seasons.. As well as all forms of skiing and snowboarding, you can choose from a number of natural hot spring resorts and enjoy the perfect way to relax your tired out body.
