Nebraska Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation
Nebraska, in the centre of the US, is composed of two major regions: the till plains of the east, formed by retreating glaciers and featuring gently rolling hills and the cities of Omaha and Lincoln; and the western region which is known as the ‘Great Plains’ and includes various smaller, diverse land regions that interrupt its generally flat topography.
After the Nebraska Territory was created in 1854, the first great wave of homesteaders poured into Nebraska to claim their free land granted by the federal government. The local shortage of trees meant that many built their first homes out of sod. The great transformation that the Homestead Act was to catalyse led to profound and permanent changes to the landscape, to Native Americans, immigration and migration patterns and to agriculture. Once considered part of the Great American Desert, Nebraska today is a leading farming state. In Beatrice, you can visit the Homestead National Monument of America, which commemorates the lives and accomplishments of all pioneers in bringing about this great change. This area is also home to the Gage County Historical Museum, located in the 1906 Burlington Passenger Train Station, and offering an insight into the local industry, the railroads and the agriculture of Gage County. There are many opportunities in ‘Pioneer Country’ to relive what was and important occupation for some of the pioneers, and enjoy local hunting and fishing. Nebraska claims to have more miles of river than any other state.
Another attraction showcasing the life and times of a pioneer family can be found in Cambridge, where you can visit the Faling Living History Tour Home and admire what is an architectural masterpiece, now serving also as a B&B and art gallery. The Medicine Creek State Recreation Area provides fun for water enthusiasts, with its 1,700 acres of water. The Harlan County Lake, situated near the town of Alma and right on the frontier, is a reservoir where you can go fishing and boating, with three active boat ramps providing access to Nebraska’s second largest lake. Nearby in the ‘Prairie Lakes’ area, railway fanatics will be amazed at the sight of the world’s largest railroad classification yard, North Platte UPRR Bailey Yard, which can be admired from the Golden Spike Tower with a 360 degree observation deck, due to open in the summer of 2008. North Platte is the place to visit the Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park, and see the home of the famous buffalo hunter, scout and creator of the Wild West Show.
The ‘panhandle’ of Nebraska is the site of the Chimney Rock National Historic Site and the Scotts Bluff National Monument, where you can see some of the most recognised landmarks of the Oregon Trail and learn about the travels of Captain John C. Fremont in 1842. Board the Nebkota Dinner Train for a dining car excursion through the scenic Pine Ridge area, or visit a century-old cattle ranch. At Callaway, the Ridder Ranch is open to tours, where you can explore pristine pasture trailswhere just around the bend may be a coyote, mule deer, prairie chicken or wild turkey. Drink pure water from a pasture windmill and leave with lasting impressions of a Nebraska Sandhills ranch. Over on the other side of Nebraska, in the Kreycik Riverview Elk Ranch, Niobrara, you can jump on a covered wagon and ride through this working farm which is home to bison, elk and fallow deer.
