New Mexico Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation
The state of New Mexico is situated in the Southwestern region of the US, with a unique culture reflecting the strong influences of both its Hispanic and Native American population. The climate is extremely arid, its territories being covered by a range of rose-coloured deserts to snow-capped peaks. Some of the mountainous areas are heavily forested, but other than a few important rivers such as the famous Rio Grande, it has little surface water.
The Northwestern region of the state has some fascinating sites located amid dramatic landscapes, mainly focusing on the wealth of Indian culture which prevailed during significant periods of the past. Explore America’s largest Indian reservation, the Navajo Nation, as well as the Zuni, Acoma, and Laguna pueblos, and the Jicarilla Apache Nation. Settlement began here with the Ancestral Pueblo civilisations flourishing at what are now the Chaco Culture National Historic Park. You can still see the incredible stone structures they constructed amid the dramatic rock formations of the Chaco Canyon, to mark the paths of the celestial bodies. In the late 1800s, the Santa Fe Railway used the Indian culture to attract rail passengers to the West until Amtrak took over. When Route 66, the first major multistate highway was built, motorists claimed the Northwest’s section its most memorable.
In the Northeastern region, the plains of Oklahoma, Colorado and Texas meet the mountains. Still visible are the deep wagon-wheel ruts of those frontiering souls travelling the Santa Fe Trail from Missouri to the state capital. Explore the Army post ruins established in 1851 at the Fort Union National Monument near Las Vegas and you’ll learn about the soldiers who were there to protect the trail. Also around Las Vegas, check out the spring and autumn migration of waterfowl and Birds of Prey at the Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge. The eastern slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains have a number of wonderful lakes in their region, which are fantastic for fishing and water sports. You can scuba dive in the amazing 81-foot deep clear pool known as the Blue Hole in Santa Rose, which maintains a 63-degree temperature all year round. You must see also the ancient Anasazi multi-storey settlements of the now-abandoned Pecos Pueblo in the Pecos National Historic Park.
New Mexico’s capital, Santa Fe, is situated in the North-central region, and offers the visitor numerous world-renowned art galleries, the US’s oldest church, museums, performance venues and great cuisine. The landscape of the region is what inspired some of Georgia O’Keefe´s paintings, through through the wonderful colours and rugged forms of its spectacular volcanic mountain ranges. In the winter you can ski and snowboard, and in the summer don your hiking boots to explore some of the landscapes and ancient pueblos that you will find here.
A trip to Albuquerque in the Central region of the state will delight you with a range of attractions from the Kodak International Balloon Festival, the Sandia Peak Ski Area, the Biological Park, all amid vast, beautiful landscapes and a rich Pueblo heritage. To the south, you can discover, along the Rio Grande, the old path of El Camino Real and the Chihuahua Trail. To the east and north, is the Turquoise Trail, a historic route through several legendary mining towns. In nearby hills are numerous abandoned turquoise mines first worked by Native Americans.
Southwest and Southeast New Mexico feature the real Old West Country of Billy the Kid, Apache ambushes and cattle trails. You can also visit some incredible rock formations, such as the Three Rivers Petroglyph National Recreation Site, the Carlsbad Caverns National Park and the White Sands National Monument. Hang out at Roswell and visit the International UFO Museum and Research Center, where you can find out whether a UFO really did crash here in 1947.
