This state is located on the Atlantic Seaboard, in the Southern region of the US, and was the home of the first English colony in the Americas. See the breathtaking Fontana Dam, ranked among the most beautiful in the world, which is the highest concrete gravity dam east of the Rockies. The Appalachian Trail crosses over the top, and it has a visitor observatory so that you can be astounded by the immensity of this project, realised in 1942-43. Visit also the Flat Rock District, where about a century and a half ago, large summer estates now included on the National register of Historic Places were built in the English manner by the affluent Charlestonians, Europeans and prominent plantation owners of the South’s low country. Located at the junction of the Appalachian Trail and the French Broad River, Hot Springs was once a Mecca for wealthy Southerners attracted by the hot natural springs and cool mountain air. Today, it is a magnet for those wanting to benefit from the therapeutic powers of the waters, as well as a stop-off for passing hikers and climbers. At the Historic Orchard in Altapass, enjoy hayrides following the path of the Revolutionary War mountain soldiers. This is an Appalachian cultural and historical centre celebrating the people, music, art and natural beauty of the Blue RidgeMountains. A century old, the orchard sits astride the Parkway, preserving some of the most spectacular scenery in North Carolina. Visitors can pick their own delicious mountain apples, and buy products ranging from jams and jellies to fudge and local music.
In the Piedmont region, visit some of the historic houses and gardens, such as the Haywood Hall House and Gardens in Raleigh, the Montrose Gardens and the Old Salem Museums and Gardens, for an unforgettable experience which brings to life the heritage of the early South. There are a number of sites which commemorate battlegrounds and cemeteries of the Civil War. At the Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site, walk the fields on which 80,000 Union and Confederate soldiers fought. Tour the nearby Harper House, where wounded from both sides were treated.
The Coastal region was the site of the world´s first successful manned controlled power heavier-than-air flights by the Wright brothers at Kill Devil’s Hills near Kitty Hawk in 1903. At the Wright Brothers National Monument, it is possible to visit the museum which exhibits a reproduction of the 1903 airplane and 1902 glider, as well as a reprodution of their living quarters, hangar and the first flight grounds. Visitors should see the Elizabethan Gardens at Manteo, which are a living memorial to the English colonists who came to America in 1584-1587. Designed by the renowned firm of Innocenti and Webel, it contains elements of 16th century statuary, and indigenous plants and herbs. The Elizabethan Gardens is one of many sites on the Historic Albemarle Tour.
