Rhode Island Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation
Despite its name, the state of Rhode Island lies mostly on the US mainland, with the lowland region of Narrangasett Bay in the east containing more than 30 islands of which Aquidneck and Conanicut are the largest. Western Rhode Island forms part of the New England Upland, although the state is mainly flat, containing no real mountains.
From Benefit Street’s ‘Mile of History’ on the East Side to festive Federal Hill, Rhode Island’s own ‘Little Italy’, the capital city of Providence is well known and loved for its abundance of historic and cultural attractions. Three-and-a-half centuries of history are alive and well on the streets of Providence, as evident in the scores of immaculately-preserved Colonial, Federal, Greek Revival and Victorian houses located throughout the city. The Rhode Island State House, Arcade, John Brown House and the Meeting House of the First Baptist Church in America are among the many historic buildings which are open to the public all year round. The East Bay region, steeped in British and Colonial heritage, comprises of the towns of Barrington, Bristol, East Providence and Warren. Home of the oldest Fourth of July parade in the US, East Bay attractions include the historic Bristol Harbour, delightful inns and miles of old stone fences. The 14 mile East Bay Bike Path which runs through all four communities, offers an unparalleled view of Narrangasett Bay to cyclists, walkers, joggers and rollerbladers. Blithewold Mansion and Gardens is a waterfront estate boasting a 45-room manor house and some of the most picturesque gardens in the eastern US.
North and east of Newport, the laid-back charm of East Bay is evidenced in an array of antiques stores, historic inns, secluded marinas, main streets and village squares. Newport itself is the famous resort city of America´s Cup yacht racing and magnificent Gilded Age mansions. Some of these palatial ‘summer cottages’ owned by America’s elite are today open for tours. The stunning coastline, glittering harbour and charming Colonial seaport have lured the world’s wealthy for more than 150 years, and now everybody can enjoy the beautiful beaches, lively waterfront and cultural attractions of America’s Sailing Capital.
A visit to the coastal region called South County is a nostalgic trip back to the days before family pilgrimages to mega theme parks became a way of life. Holiday-makers love the simplicity they find here: miles of shoreline dotted with charming beachfront cottages and inns, friendly roadside vendors selling the freshest seafood, locally gron produce, and piping hot fruit pies. Beach lovers while away the summer days by building sandcastles, riding the waves on boogie boards, surf-casting and digging for clams.
Shops and restaurants are abundant in bustling Old Harbour of Block Island, served by frequent ferry boats from Point Judith, and accessible only by boat or by air. This beautifully unspoiled haven of a bygone era has been heralded as ‘One of the Last Twelve Great Places in the Western Hemisphere’. Visitors will enjoy its tranquility, the rolling hills and dramatic bluffs, and the quaint Victorian shoreside architecture.
Visitors, school groups and history buffs are also drawn to the state’s Blackstone Valley region, notable for its heritage as the birthplace of America’s Industrial Revolution. The story is told at the Slater Mill Historic Site, as well as the Blackstone Valley National Heritage Corridor. The Musuem of Work and Culture provides a fascinating interactive experience for visitors as it traces the story of mill workers who came from the farms of Quebec in the last third of the 19th century to work in the shoe and textile factories of New England.
