South Carolina Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation
South Carolina is a state situated in the southeastern region of the US, composed of the coastal Lowcountry parallel to the Atlantic coastline, the Sandhills region, rising in elevation towards the Piedmont region and finally the Foothills in the northwestern tip. The Upstate region contains a portion of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Table Rock State Park. The Chatooga River is a favourite whitewater rafting destination. The capital and largest city in the state is Columbia, with Charleston and Greenville forming two other major centres.
Beginning at the coast, the Lowcountry and Resort Islands region of South Carolina is scattered with small, charming towns such as Hampton, Estill, Brunson and Varnville, typical of old-fashioned southern living. Life is slower and easier in these friendly rural towns where numerous farms, antebellum houses, historic churches and cemeteries still exist today. On Ediso, one of South Carolina's barrier islands, you will find moss-hung ancient oaks, unspoiled marshes and rich agricultural land as well as imprints of the island's original inhabitants, Edistow Indians, and the remains of an oyster shell mound, the Shell Bank, within the state park. This is a hauntingly beautiful area of white beaches washed by the tide.
The bustling Charleston is a genteel, elegant city boasting a number of pre-Revolutionary buildings. Visitors can wander through cobblestone streets lined with antique shops, browse the Old City Market and tour house museums and monuments to wealthy Colonial merchants and plantation owners. Nearby, millions of visitors each year are drawn to staying in one of a string of fabulous beach resorts along the Grand Strand and Myrtle Beach.
The inland area around the town of Aiken used to be a favourite winter resort for some of America's elite, and with its dense pine forests and wonderful bridlepaths, is now a horse and rider heaven. In neighbouring Santee Cooper County, golf rivals fishing as the area's best lure. Here you will find an abundance of wildlife amid a watery landscape of lakes and marshes. The roses of the Edisto Memorial Garden in Orangebury must be seen to be believed.
Discover the past in the Olde English District of South Carolina, so-called for the English settlement in the mid-1700s as well as the Revolutionary War battles fought here. You can spend a few peaceful hours where the British spent a rough year at the Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site, where the life and surroundings of the soldier has been vividly evoked.
Looming majestically beyond the soft low hills of the Piedmont, the Blue Ridge Escarpment will thrill the soul of the mountain lover. The stream-laced foothills and rugged slopes of the Blue Ridge have profoudly affected the development of the state's most economically and geographically diverse region, today forming a stunning backdrop for attractions in the area. Spot three species of trout in the Chattooga River as you hurtle down the rapids, or enjoy a peaceful stroll around the South Carolina Botanical Garden with its interesting collection of nature-based sculpture, each incorporatinfg living plant material. Discover the Uplands while staying in one of its spas, romantic cottages or luxurious inns.
