Texas Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation
Texas is located in the southwest of the US, being the second-largest state both in area and population, and having the second-largest economy. But where Texas has the clear lead is in the 16 million head of cattle it produces. Cattle ranching was never the chief industry of Texas. Before the oil boom and as far back as the first Anglo settlers, the chief industry here, as in all of the southern states, was cotton farming. After World War II, Texas became increasingly industrialized, and today is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries.
Texas is the southernmost part of the Great Plains, which ends up against the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range of Mexico. West Texas features the classic Texas landscape of the spaghetti westerns, with rolling tumbleweeds, cacti, scrub brush and hot, sandy plains that stretch to a distant horizon. This region beckons nature lovers who are looking for an epic experience within its wide open space, mountains and wilderness. Explore some of its beautiful parks: Guadelupe Mountains National Park, Big Bend National Park, the oak forests at Monahans Sandhills State Park and the reservoir at Balmorhea State Park. There are museums showcasing the life on the open frontier of the Old West at Fort Bliss, Fort Davis and Fort Stockton, for those seeking to relive the world of pioneers, cowboys and gold seekers. At the Tigua Indian Reservation at Ysleta, you can learn about the rich heritage of the original Native American residents of the area, or enjoy some one-off experiences such as seeing the Marfa Lights, witnessing the Terlingua chilli cook-offs or finding precious minerals at Woodward Agate Ranch in Alpine.
In the Panhandle Plains of the north of Texas, you will find some of the clearest and brightest of star-filled evening skies you will find anywhere in the Lone Star State. There is rugged beauty all around, from vast expanses of fertile farmland to the majestic scenery of the Palo Duro Canyon State Park in Canyon. Visitors hoping to find some nostalgic Americana can do so along Route 66, and others on a rock‘n’roll pilgrimage will want to visit Lubbock, former home of Buddy Holly. To the southeast lies Abilene, with its fabulous zoo, the Abilene State Park and the Frontier Texas attraction which gives you the opportunity to experience life as an early settler on the Texas plains.
The state’s capital is at Austin, a city which is host to many outstanding attractions and points of interest. See the State Capitol building, the Lyndon B. Johnson Library and Museum and the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. Browse in shops along South Congress Avenue, or check out the factory outlets at San Marcos, or the incredible Cabela’s in the town of Buda, which features an in-store mountain and fresh-water aquarium. For more mega-fun head to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex which is packed with entertainment districts, heritage museums, zoos and further great shopping opportunities.
In eastern Texas, you will discover a whole different side to the state, when you see that it is covered in thousands of acres of majestic pine and hardwood forests. During the Christmas season, this part of Texas becomes magical. Town squares are transformed into holiday wonderlands with thousands of twinkling lights. Visitors can relive the childhood delight of old-fashioned and lighted holiday parades, and tour historic homes festooned with traditional decorations. See the star-topped oil derricks of the World’s Richest Acre in Kilgore. One of the towns in which you can witness the impact of the oil industry at the turn of the 20th century. Other parts of the region, with their dogwoods, cypress, magnolia and lush swampland, exude a feeling of being in the Old South – an impression furthered by the grand plantation homes and graceful mansions. This region is home to many state parks, national forests and bodies of water that offer all kinds of fun and enjoyment.
Finally, the warm water of the Gulf of Mexico makes the 624 miles of Gulf coastline a favourite destination for those looking for the unspoilt beauty of the Noth Padre National Seashore or the party action of the Galveston and Port Arthur area as their preferred place to swim, sail, surf or relax. In this region, the Rio Grande Valley is the nation’s top birdwatching area, and there are many opportunities to watch wildlife or visit some of the state’s very important historic battleground sites, such as the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site in Deer Park. On the other hand, for a truly out-of-this-world experience, visit the NASA/ Space Center at Houston and enjoy learning about some of the history of the US space programme.
