Vermont Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation
Vermont is situated in the New England region of the US, famous for its Christmas tree production and for being the leading producer of maple syrup in the nation, its capital is Montpelier and its largest city is Burlington. The west bank of the Connecticut River marks the estern border of the state with New Hampshire. Lake Champlain is the major lake in the state, and separates Vermont from New York in the northwest. About 77% of the state is covered by forest, and it consists of 6 distinct physiographic regions: the Northeastern Highlands, the Green Mountains, the Taconic Mountains, the Champlain Lowlands, the Valley of Vermont and the Vermont Piedmont. The Green Mountain range forms a north-south spine running most of the length of the state. In the autumn, Vermont's hills explode into a famous display of colour as the foliage fransforms into red, orange and golden hues with the onset of cold weather. A particular set of soil and climatic conditions unique to the area lead to the intensity and abundance of the local colour.
There are many ways to experience Vermont, and some of the best adventures can be found at Vermont's 52 state parks, which range from remote islands less than 200 acres in size to the deepest wilderness woods. The 500 mile long Connecticut River Byway provides a great alternative to Interstate driving. This scenic corridor of highways, byways and waterways is a great way to explore the area. Ten of Vermont's most historic towns serve as 'waypoint communities' along the Byway. With their origins as early crossroads and trading points, these towns have been welcoming travellers since the days of flat boats, stagecoaches and steam engines. Today, these communities have built or are building new waypoint interpretive centres to provide you with local information and historical background to the sites you are seeing. You can visit more than 50 covered bridges including the timber Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge- the longest in the US, and the longest two-span covered bridge in the world.
Many of the small towns and villages dotting the Vermont map are made all the more special by the presence of a general store. For decdes, the general store was a place to buy necessities, meet with friends, and was central to the community. Willey's Store in Greensboro is one of Vermont's largest and most traditional general stores. The Rambling building with wood floors has served 5 generations of customers and carries everything from custom meats to clothing, hardware, dry goods and hunting equipment. You will be delighted also to visit stores in Northfield Falls, Jacksonville and Newfane, where you can shop for gifts and homemade produce.
More than 20 alpine ski resorts and almost 50 cross-country touring centres dot the state. Vermont skiing accommodates every level from the advanced downhiller to the training toddler. As well as a fantastic outdoor experience, winter evenings can be spent at some of the small clubs near the ski resorts which are favourite performance venues for both established and up and coming music acts because of the intimate atmosphere and appreciative audiences. In Killington, check out The PickleBarrel and the Wobbly Barn, and in Burlington, the Higher Ground.
