Virginia Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation
The Commonwealth of Virginia is a southeastern state on the Atlantic coast of the US. Named by Sir Walter Raleigh after Queen Elizabeth I of England, the Virgin Queen, it was first settled permanently by the English in 1607 at Jamestown. Much later, during the Civil War, more battles were fought here than anywhere else in the US. Richmond was the capital of the Confederate States of America, until it was captured and the capital moved to Danville. Virginia is known as the location of The Pentagon in Arlington, Northern Virginia: the largest office building on earth. Virginia's topography varies across the state from the ridges and valleys of the north and west, towards the Eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay Atlantic coastline.
At Virginia's westernmost tip, the Heart of the Appalachia region is one of landscapes of rugged beauty, which can be explored at Burke's Garden, the Cumberland Gap National Park and the Natural Tunnel State Park. These areas offer great facilities for outdoor recreation and extraordinary physical features: caves, chasms and pinnacles. You can also take the 'Heritage Music Trail' of Virginia and visit some mountain-music venues for serious flat-footin', fast fiddle and banjo tunes. Nearby Bristol in the Blue Ridge Mountains is the Birthplace of Country Music and is situated within a region of some of the most beautiful landscapes in the state, as seen along the Blue Ridge Parkwayand the Mount Rogers Scenic Byway. There are wonderful attractions showcasing the history and heritage of the pioneers and mining communities of the region.
Stretching northwest from here is the Shenandoah Valley, which features many sites devoted to the pioneers who travelled westward, and settled and farmed the fertile valley they found there. You can find out more about their stories at the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton City and the Shenandoah Valley Folk Art and Heritage Center in Dayton. There are a series of heritage sites revolving around the Civil War, and an abundance of resorts such as Bryce, the Homestead and Massanutten, which offer year-round activities in the great outdoors.
Central Virginia was colonised as early as 1617, and you will relive some of this early history at the Henricus Historical Park where Pocahontas grew up, the Flowerdrew Hundred settlement and the Georgian plantation manor house called Wilton House Museum. For cultural interest, visit the spectacular Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, or take a tour around some of the state's 20 vineyards and wineries. Just outside Richmond is Paramount's Kings Dominion theme park, and in and around Charlottesville you can visit many important presidential estates.
Southern Virginia is the state's Racing Region and is home to six speedways and raceways. The outdoors and waterways of Southern Virginia are vast - enjoy hiking, biking, boating, hunting and fishing with miles of shoreline and scenic byways. Or stroll through some of the historic towns once known for their bustling bright leaf tobacco markets and now National Historic Districts, with quaint, fascinating American Main Streets with wonderful antique stores and restaurants to choose from. From here it is an easy journey to the coast, Historic Jamestown, Virginia Beach and many museums based on the region's maritime and transportation heritage. The Chesapeake Bay region features beautiful coastal parks and wonderful seafood, quaint villages and expansive farmland as well as important monuments such as the George Washington Birthplace in Mount Vernon.
