West Virginia Bed and Breakfast Budget Hotel Guest House Accommodation
Noted for its great natural beauty and significant for its logging and coalmining industries, West Virginia is the only state to be located entirely within the Appalachian Mountain range- for this reason nicknamed 'The Mountain State'. The highest point within the state is Spruce Knob which is covered by a boreal forest within the Monongahela National Forest area, one of the many areas in the state under protection for their rich biodiversity and scenic beauty. The Appalachian Mountains are some of the oldest on earth, having formed over 300 million years ago.
West Virginia's largest town and capital city is Charleston, with its impressive State Capitol building, theatres, museums, universities and restaurants. The metro region takes its name from the populated zone that stretches along almost 60 miles from Charleston to the railroad and shipping port of Huntington. As well as city pleasures, the region offers the varied outdoor sport and recreational opportunities characteristic of the area, historical attractions relating to the Native American and Afro-American history and quaint towns such as Dunbar, Hurricane, Milton and Barboursville where you will find high quality crafts, hot-air balloon rides and country music.
South of here, the rich natural resources of the New River Region have beckoned and rewarded explorers for centuries. Each year, the region's rivers float whitewater rafters, while rock climbers scale the walls of the ancient New River Gorge. Throughout the region, miles and miles of trails lead hikers, bikers and horseback riders beside pristine sparkling streams, through historical abandoned mining towns, out to spectacular scenic viewpoints and into charming villages. Some of West Virginia's most beautiful state and natural parklands are to be found here.
The Mid-Ohio Valley's history and culture are intertwined with the Ohio RIver, the focal point of Parkersburg. The comfortable pace of life in the region's largest city belies its dramatic early days when pioneers, adventurers, entrepreneurs and rascals streamed down the river in search of western fortunes. By 1792, Parkersburg was a commercial centre and defense stronghold, with a blockhouse on the site of what is now a city park, The Point. For a taste of those times, ride the sternwheeler that departs from Point Park and ferries passengers back to the year 1800 on Blennerhasset Island. Further glories of the Victorian past can be discovered in the extravagant homes of Wheeling and Sistersville. Wheeling Centre Market caters for lovers of antiques, crafts, gourmet and speciliality foods and unique gifts from two historic market houses, as well as restaurants and Victorian-style confectionery. You can follow the Ohio river north to Wellsburg for a taste of river town life. The historic port town's downtown wharf still welcomes riverboats, including the Mississippi Queen and Delta Queen. The northern panhandle remains a lively crossroads - of highway and rivers, of decorative Victorian architecture and down-home jamboree, of city treasures and country pleasures, of ancient history and spaceage technology.
West Virginia's Potomac Highlands have vast tracts of national and state forests and wilderness areas, as well as enough winter snow to make them an unrivalled destination for outdoor adventures. Try Snowshoe Mountain Resort, Canaan Valley Resort and Timberline Four Seasons Resort for family fun. An alternative way to explore this region is via one of its 3 excursion railroads, each offering distinctly different rides. From the open train carriages, passengers can often spot bald eagles soaring overhead, rivers abundant with fish and banks of wildflowers on the unspoiled mountainsides.
